Topic Addressed

The perils of growth mindset. Black men and boys in education.
Author’s Perspective

(What does he think about Dweck’s argument)

Alfie Kohn strongly opposes the arguments given by Dweck on students’ mindset. Dweck argues that the behavior of students is strongly related with their mindset. For instance, students who believe in the development and growth of their mindset outdo those who believe that their intelligence is fixed. Literally, his argument is based on hard work. However, Alfie Kohn totally disagrees with this argument (Brooks, 2017). According to him, the behavior of children is highly related to what they observe from their parents and other adults. Likewise, the behavior of students is mainly attributed to what they s. Luke Wood argues that the notion and argument by Dweck that mindset of students is based on efforts rather than abilities are not wrong but incomplete especially when applied to men of color. He argues that the assertion that mindset is developed through efforts, hard work, strategies and perseverance is not enough. There must be a combination of efforts and abilities to bear fruits.
