The Indian Rebellion

Why did the Indians revolt against the British in 1857?

The British East India Company soldiers revolted against the British in 1857 and spread to other cities and army divisions across India. The rebellion had killed hundreds of thousands of people by the time it was coming to an end. The mutiny was facilitated by the introduction of a new pattern in using the 1853 Enfield rifle. The new ammunition used greased paper cartridges and soldiers were required to bite into the paper to open the cartridges, hence load the guns.
