The final paper (7+ pages plus Works Cited page) needs to be a multi-source (scholarly sources only—minimum 6 sources including two target novels), documented, persuasive, double spaced, grammatically correct paper in MLA format. The goal is to take a deeper dive into the intertwining of two central themes we have focused on throughout our course. Your paper must focus exclusively on the relationship between the individual journey/identity and culture clashes many people experience (either with family and/or with society) by choosing one character each from two novels we have studied and comparing/contrasting the two characters in terms of this theme/focus. Note that one character you analyze can be from a novel you presented on, but not both. Elaborate on this theme/focus and add scholarly research sparingly (so that your Similarity score does not exceed 15% of the paper). Do not build your paper around sources; rather, construct it around your own ideas and then add material from sources to support your analysis. Ultimately, link your findings on the two characters to the texts’ insights on the complexities of the human experience (this will be near the end of your paper).

Important: Do not retell the stories as we are all familiar with them: Analyze them instead. Remember also that when referring to the two novels (as opposed to retelling their stories), you must write in present tense (even if the novel is in past tense). Dictionaries, encyclopedias, and podcasts do not count as sources, so don’t use them. Use more narrowly-focused sources from specialized experts. Sources from library databases are highly recommended. Do not use Internet sources as you want your sources to be from experts recognized as such in their fields. Do not use Wikipedia or blogs as sources. Be sure your thesis statement is clear and persuasive, and that your title, should you choose to use one, adds interest to your paper. Remember to structure your paper around your ideas, not around sources.

Also remember that your Similarity score must not be greater than 15%, so use sources minimally and avoid long quotes. Papers will be evaluated on the quality of your research, writing and most importantly, focus, organization, and analysis. What we want is a laser-like focus on the topic: Aim for depth, not breadth.

The characters used will be Chandran from the novel “The Bachelor of Arts” by R.K Narayan and Waverly Jong from “The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan.
