MD 3 Discussion 3- Advanced investigations in Biology

The Endangered Species Act of 1973 establishes the importance of protecting and maintaining biodiversity in the United States and assigns responsibilities for listing threatened or endangered species, assessing ecosystem health, minimizing species loss, and recovering population numbers of endangered species listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The federal agency works with individual states and other public and private partners to preserve natural habitats and species diversity on private and public lands.

Participating in this activity will enable you to demonstrate your mastery of the module outcomes #2 & 4.

In your discussion post, research conservation efforts to preserve endangered species in your state. Start with a Google search for “Endangered species and state name,” for example, “endangered species Vermont.” Look for reliable sources of information. Are any species likely to be extinct within the next 50 years? Pick one conservation effort and evaluate published reports. Is it likely that the species will recover and what are the major obstacles to overcome in order to achieve species preservation?

MD 3 Discussion 3-

Compare the scientific opportunities for long-term exploration offered by the Moon and Mars – what types of scientific research could be done more effectively on one of those worlds than on earth?
What difficulties would there be in establishing a permanent base or colony on each of these two worlds? Consider the logistical and habitation requirements to establish and maintain any long-term human colonies.
Answer both questions. For full credit, you should explore at least one resource besides your textbook. Be sure to cite references used.

Discussion One
Although the 1973 Endangered Species Act federal protection exists, endangered species protection varies stringently across different states. In Vermont, a law was passed in 2016, Act 145, which added more legal protection for the threatened and endangered species. This legislation gave the state government and the secretary of Natural Resources Agency the authority to manage the protection of the critical habitat for the species (Camacho, 2017). Although the legislation does not provide any official approach for designating the critical habitat for the threatened and endangered species, it still ensures that the species are protected from hunting and other human activities that can lead to the decrease of their population.
