Written Assignment I(750words): Choose a listening example from the ones on the accompanying CDs. Describe the elements, composer, style, form or other aspects of the music discussed in the text. Biographical information of a composer should be kept to a minimum. Length: 2 FULL pages minimum, 4 pages maximum, double spaced, font size 11. Assignments not meeting the required length will be scored proportionately lower. Please refer to the Grading Rubric on page 7 of this Syllabus.
Written Assignment II (750words): Describe a Symphony by one of the following composers: Joseph Haydn, W.A. Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Gustav Mahler, William Grant Still or Peter Tchaikovsky. You may choose any Symphony written by the above composers with the following exclusions: Mozart: Symphony No. 40, Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, Haydn: Symphony No. 94 “Surprise”. The composition to be described has to have the word Symphony in the title given by the composer. Length: 2 FULL pages minimum, 4 pages maximum double spaced, font size 11. See length requirement in the previous paragraph. The assignment should focus on the areas described in Written Assignment I. Most Symphonies have multiple movements, typically 4. While you may focus on one particular movement, all movements must be included in the description. Please refer to the Grading Rubric on page 8 of this Syllabus.

Extra Credit Assignment(600words): An Extra Credit Assignment is possible with the same requirements as for Written Assignment II, please choose a Symphony that is different from the one used for Written Assignment II. It is worth up to 50 points, which are added to your point total. The exclusions listed under Assignment II apply to this assignment as well. Please refer to the Grading Rubric in this Syllabus.
