Organizational structure is the method by which workflows through an organization. It allows groups to work together within their functions to manage the task. Traditional organizational structures tend to be more formal, with employees grouped by function. Less traditional structures are more flexible and can respond quickly to changing business environments. Three emerging organizational structures associated with these changes are network organizations, virtual organizations, and the circle organization.

Emerging organizational structure is leaning towards flexibly connecting teams and replacing departments. Studies indicate that the traditional hierarchical approach has the lowest performance in an organization while a fully connected network provides the best performance. The findings reflect that organizations need a more flexible hybrid structure to allow mobility and lateral connection between the individuals (Koohborfardhaghighi, 2017). The open boundaries structures provide an opportunity for employees to showcase their talents and share information more readily among functions, divisions, and staff. Virtual structures are collaborative and created to respond to a specific need (Keers et al., 2017).

Factors that negatively impact emerging structures

Knowledge sharing has become necessary to ensure the success of the company. However, the new organizational structures have some drawbacks. Emerging organizational structures may experience difficulty in overcoming silos inside the organization. There may be challenges between organizations such as trust, increased communication, complex processes, and difficulty identifying who has the final say. In addition, it provokes the onset of stress, uncertainty, and insecurity among employees. (Koohborfardhaghighi, 2017).

Well-aligned organizations can adapt and realign as needed. Organizational realignment involves closing the structural gaps impeding organizational performance. It seems that much of the stress and challenges associated with the new organizational structures is the uncertainty of who is responsible for what task. In my opinion, to be successful in this model, communication is imperative. Since the lines of responsibility are blurred, a heightened level of connection and communication is necessary. In addition, placing adaptable employees at all levels will help to ensure success.

Organizational structure is a configuration of relationships with respect to the allocation of tasks, responsibilities, and authority (Sitar & Škerlavaj, 2018). Organizational structures help set order and prevent confusion within companies. Emerging organizational structures are companies that are shifting to organizing around processes (Nelson & Quick, 2019). One example is when I worked at a bank and the manager split my team up into groups to focus on different aspects of the company. The group I was a part of focused on creative ways to sell banking products to customers. Some emerging organizational structures are network organizations, virtual organizations, and circle organizations (Nelson & Quick, 2019). In-network organizations managers coordinate relationships that are internal and external to the firm. Virtual organizations are temporary and consist of independent enterprises (Nelson & Quick, 2019). The circle organization is more open and contains three parts: create demand, produce product, and provide support (Nelson & Quick, 2019). There are different forces that contribute to the evolving of organizational structures which include shorter organizational life cycles, globalization, changes in technology, and high-performance work systems. As structures change managers must change too. Managers should focus more on building relationships with employees, coaching, and cross-functional collaboration.

One factor that could negatively impact the organizational structure is the personality of the managers. I have worked with a manager before that had a negative attitude. She was depressive and it affected the work environment. Supervisors’ emotional experiences will influence the types of leadership behaviors they display (Su-Ying & Katrina, 2018). Other factors that can negatively impact organizational structure is an organization not responding creatively to a changing environment and conflict between different departments working against each other instead of working together.

Some preventive processes that I can employ to guard against those factors would include having specialized training for managers to make sure they are on board with the different changes and understand how they should behave to effectively manage their team. Also, I will make everywhere aware of the resources available that will help them stay up to date with the continuing changes in the organizational structure. To make sure departments are working together, I will remind everyone of the goal of the organization and explain how the different functions must work together to achieve the goal. If anyone is against working together with other departments then they will be reprimanded.
