question 1: What is early farm life like for Alexandria and her family?
question 2:Cather describes Alexandria as a strong, resilient character throughout the novel. She is able to withstand challenges that her family cannot as easily bear. Yet the first scene that we see with her is a decidedly sentimental and kind one: Alexandria rescuing young Emil’s kitten and comforting him. How do Alexandria’s kindness and compassion contribute to her character? Does it run contrary to her strength?
