Oral Candidiasis

Introduction

Oral candidiasis, also referred to as mouth thrush is a type of candidiasis that occurs in the mouth. It is a yeast or fungal infection of the various mucous membranes in the human mouth. The bacteria is carried around in more than 50% of the world’s population and is normal for many people who do not maintain proper dental health as is required. The condition is not considered to be a disease by many health professionals. However, when pathogens are present in the bacteria, it can lead to oral candidiasis which is infectious and can affect the health of an individual. The most common fungus that causes oral candidiasis is known as Candida albicans. Other types of fungi that may cause oral candidiasis include Candida tropicalis and Candida glabrata.
