Question Four – Voter Turnout in the United States

Voter turnout refers to the percentage of eligible voters within a given jurisdiction that cast a ballot during the various elections that are conducted. Voter turnout is often given as a percentage of the eligible voters. A low voter turnout percentage is considered to be to be desirable for any electoral process or body as it is an indication that most of the people never participated in the electoral process. In the United States, voter turnout percentages have been lower in recent years compared to other Western nations especially in Europe. The concern has been raised by various politicians and electoral bodies within the country. It is estimated that only 60% of the population turnout for presidential elections whereas only 40% turnout for primary and local elections across the country. Low voter turnout in the country is seen as an undesirable aspect since it defeats the point of democracy.
