Spiritual care is a necessity in everyone’s life that is suffering from an illness of any kind. It is one of those needs that is not much thought about like food, water and shelter but is just as important. Some people include their religion as part of their spiritual ritual but not everyone. From a nurse’s standpoint, spiritual care is providing a service or support that your patient is in need of to assist in their healing or accepting dying process. Some examples of providing spiritual care is asking a patient who is about to go to surgery if they would like to speak to a Chaplin prior to the surgery. Another example is asking a dying patient if they would like you to sit with them to listen or even quietly pray with them. I know when my father was dying, he wanted to have his family near him while he said his last words and then after he asked the palliative nurse for his morphine dose and fell asleep. Some times spiritual care means the patient might want something from the medical staff, and other times they might just ask for space to be with their family like my father. Whatever the spiritual need is, it should be validated and respected. According to Lemmger, (2002) human care is a universal phenomenon; however, its expressions, process, and care patterns differ among the cultures and persons.

Human caring involves a special relationship between the nurse and the ailing patient having concern for the well-being process of the sick patient (Watson & Woodward, 2010). Spiritual care is important to individuals suffering from any kind of illness, however, it’s usually not taken seriously like other aspects such as water, food and shelter.
