Week 6 discussion -The Pros and Cons of Addiction: Sex

The topic of discussion is Sex. There are many euphemisms for sexual intercourse. Some of the other names used for sex are 1. Act of Darkness, 2. adult naptime, 3. afternoon delight, 4. baking the potato, 5. boom-boom, 6. checking the oil, and the list go on. Sex has been a part of our lives for decades, even centuries—every human and warm body and cold blood creature breathes is here because of sexual activity. Sex is about two bodies merging. Sex, as God designed it, is much much more enjoyable. Sex unites people physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

PRO’S OF SEX

Some great benefits of sex are 1. It can lower blood pressure. 2. A natural pain reliever. 3. It can give better sleep. 4. Decrease depression and anxiety 5. Sex is one of the many ways to bring closeness to your partner. 6. It can be thought of as an exercise.

According to the article, Predictors of Quality of Life, Sexual Intercourse, and Sexual Satisfaction among Active Older Adults. “ Many older adults who have sexual relationships benefit from an essential source of reinforcement and pleasure. Sexuality helps preserve psychological and physical well being which indirectly aid to the reduction in physical and mental health problems, reduce health care cost, and may potentially increase life satisfaction (Penhallow et al., 2009).

CON’S OF SEX

While sex can be satisfying when done the healthy way. Sex can also be detrimental and have adverse effects when done the wrong way. Sex can be considered as an exercise, an activity that is supposed to strengthen our physical health. Addictive exercise can impact the lives of some individuals negatively. For some people, physical exercise can shoe harmful side effects in both physical and psychological consequences (Landolfi, 2013),

The negative of living with sexual addiction can cause a person to have more than one sexual partner. In addition, a person can become a compulsive liar lying to cover up bad habits such as cheating, drug use, pornography. Sexual addiction is a sickness. For anyone who’s suffering from this addiction, it’s no different from any other addiction. The problem tends to affect the lives of so many people. Before judging, we have to get to the root cause of any addiction. What trauma did a person suffer to cause them to embrace any addictive habit? Because with addiction, there is stigma and shame attached to it. Sometimes the trauma that causes this behavior can be so traumatic that the individual refuses to seek professional help. Some of the reasons can be rape, incest, environmental and cultural aspects. The bad behavior of any addiction can carry shame. For example, people that are caught having extra-marital affairs can be seen as having a sexual addiction. Other add to sexual addiction are pornography, rape, molestation, etc.

Reliability and Generalizability of Articles

Both articles chosen for this discussion give vital information about the pros and cons of sex. The findings in both articles can relate to both males and females of different ages and situations. The reliability of both articles is good sexual habits and bad sexual habits. When having a happy sexual life your health can improve and in some cases, it can prevent illnesses. On the other hand, if having unhealthy sexual behavior can cause a lot of problems.

As a psychologist in this situation of providing therapy to someone that has a sexual addiction. This can be a perplexing situation because sexuality is human nature and it’s great for survival. For many people, human sexuality is a tremendous source of joy, connection, and creativity. According to the APA CODE OF ETHICS “ Sexual harassment is not tolerated by psychologists. Sexual harassment is defined as sexual solicitation, physical advances, or sexually explicit verbal or nonverbal conduct that occurs in connection with a psychologist’s activities or roles as a psychologist, and that is either (1) unwelcome, offensive, or creates a hostile workplace or educational environment, and the psychologist knows or is told this, or (2) is severe or intense enough to be considered sexual harassment. Sexual harassment may take the form of a single, serious incident or a series of persistent or pervasive actions” (Apa, 2010, section 3.2).
