Response to the Article, Food Deserts
From the article, Food Deserts, by Jessica McBirney, I have understood what food deserts are, why they exist, the threats they pose to people’s health and current strategies that have been in place to try to counter them. The author has well explained the various definitions of food deserts whereby she has pointed out that the definition by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is the most commonly used. USDA definition for food deserts in urban setups as a significant percentage of the neighborhood’s residents live more than one mile away from a fresh food provider.
