Americans limited immigration from 1892 t0 1924 with the argument that the individuals might contribute to the negative social, political and economic progress in the country. That explains the strictness at the Ellis Island and prohibition of certain immigrants like criminals, laborers from China and prostitutes. Christowe had a robust experience at the Ellis Island as there were large crowds and the immigration officers were trying to eliminate some through the consistent medical checkups. The harsh treatment he received changed his perspective about American as he had earlier on thought it to be the greatest country. The arrivals differed depending on whether one was a first class or a steerage passenger.
