What effect does the hopping around in time have on your experience reading the book?

For your first response to Kindred, I want you to consider the structure of the novel. First, what do you think is Butler’s purpose in beginning the novel at the end of the story (with Dana’s arm getting injured)? Additionally, what effect does the hopping around in time have on your experience reading the book? What purpose or larger ideas do you see Butler developing in the ways she plays around with time both in the substance of her story and in the way she constructs the novel? In other words, why would she want us as readers to “time travel” metaphorically through her narrative as Dana is traveling through time literally in the novel?
