Terri Schiavo was a Florida woman in a persistent vegetative state who died on 3/31/05, nearly two weeks after her feeding tube was removed. Discuss the moral acceptability of this death from the perspective of one of the following ethical theories: utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, natural law ethics, virtue ethics. Each reply should apply a moral theory that contrasts with the theory used for the message to which the reply is posted. Both the response to this topic and the reply to another class member should identify the ethical theory being used and should clearly demonstrate the application of this theory to arrive at a conclusion about Terri Schiavo’s medical care and death.

The death of Terri Schiavo might appear is morally wrong as her husband authorized for the removal of her feeding tubes. According to the virtue ethics, the moral character is what determines whether something is wrong or right rather than the duty or the consequence of the action (Post, 2004). Her parents were at first unable to accept the death as they believe that she would have continued to live if her she was left for longer in the life-supporting machines as she was before. However, the virtues, in this case, are to analyze the situation in such a way that a decision should be made to reduce suffering and continued clinging to something that is probably hopeless.
