Based on the 1853 published memoirs of freeman Solomon Northup, 12 Years a Slave is a 2013 film adaptation that provides the audience with an opportunity to learn history and culture through motion picture. Solomon lives in New York with his two children and a wife in New York, where free slaves are allowed to engage in gainful economic activities. He plays the violin and soon attracts the attention of two white men, who seek his services, under the condition that he travels with them to New York. Unknown to him, the two are slave traders, capturing freed slaves and selling them into slavery in the south. Solomon only realizes this when it is too late as he is sold to William Ford, a plantation owner. Throughout his period in the south, he experiences betrayal and support in equal measure, but it is not until a Canadian laborer agrees to help him get a letter to New York about his condition,
