Introduction
Sickle cell anemia is a genetically inherited blood disorder that causes the red blood cells to lose their shape and eventually break down. An individual inherits sickle cell anemia from both parents, and it creates an abnormality in the functioning of the red blood cells. Healthy red blood cells have a disc-like shape that allows them to carry oxygen through small blood vessels. However, the abnormal red blood cells become hard and sticky, and they take up the form of a sickle.
