Question

I’m studying for my Humanities class and don’t understand how to answer this. Can you help me study?

n this unit we have learned that there are many similarities and few differences between counseling, case management and social work. Often, social workers do counseling, counselors do case management, and case managers function as social workers. It is not unusual that a worker has one job title but performs duties that are associated with the other occupation. In other words, we have more in common than we are different.

For this unit, please find a job description for a position in the human services field that you would enjoy. Please post the job announcement (copy and paste) and explain why you would like to do the work.

Please do not hesitate to use this opportunity to share employment, field placement and agency interview leads with the class.

Requirements: do not matter

This is the unit to ask questions and participate in discussions about the nature of professional work in the human services field. We will discuss counseling, case management, social work, and related professional fields. A prerecorded PowerPoint is designed to help you consider professional options and educational pathways. Many students in associate degree programs try to decide between majoring in Human Services, Psychology, or Sociology. The recorded presentation is designed to help you to consider options.

In brief, Human Services is an ideal degree for anyone interested in employment in the field with a two-year associate degree. Students who graduate from the Human Services program will often take employment at the entry or mid-level positions and many choose to transfer for bachelor degrees in Human Services or Social Work. Students who plan to transfer may consider Human Services, Sociology, or Psychology. At the bachelor’s level, the degrees are fairly equivalent and prepare students for jobs requiring a “bachelor’s degree in a behavioral social science discipline”. Here is what is important to know before selecting a major: At the Master’s level, a person can get licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Clinical Social Worker. A person pursuing a degree in Psychology will need to obtain a doctoral degree to get licensed. Counselors and Social Workers can have private independent practices, bill insurance companies, and diagnose clients. They can do all that a psychologist can do except for psychological testing.

The full-time educational commitment is as follows:

Associates degree – 2 years

Bachelor’s degree – 2 more years

Master’s degree – 2 more years

Doctoral degree – 5 – 6 more years

And so, as a Licensed Professional Counselor I can diagnose, bill insurance companies, and I had a private practice for many years. I strongly encourage anyone considering graduate-level study to major in a license-eligible field and get your degree from an accredited university. For more information about credentialing and professional associations, read the handout posted in this module.
