Introduction

The late 19th century came to be known as the “Age of Imperialism.” Imperialism is a notion where one nation that is powerful takes full control over countries that appear weak by enforcing their political, economic, and cultural ideas to them. Imperialism causes native people to lose their freedom as it undermines their sovereignty regarding political and economic decisions (Rowe, 2000). During the late nineteenth and twentieth century’s, the United States exerted imperialist power over the Latin, Caribbean, and the Pacific nations, and these actions affected these nations in many ways. Before the age of imperialism, the US was not interested in imperialism because of the civil wars, and hence it wanted to stay away from foreign alliances and wars.  But by the 1890s, the notion of imperialism had spread across America partly due to the belief in American exceptionalism; the notion that America has mission to expand democracy and liberty to other countries which makes it unique.
