Suicide is a leading cause of deaths around the world which affects people of all ages. The World Health Organization keeps track of the suicide rates across the globe to establish which countries have the highest numbers and their changes in years. While comparing the suicide occurrences in the US and India, the numbers are high in both regions although it is highest in China. Research states that the most senior cause of suicides amongst Americans and Indians is poverty and mental illnesses.

In 2014, the WHO stated that India recorded the highest suicide cases although it is not the most suicidal among the Asian nations in the South. The rate at that time was 21.1% when calculated in the deaths per 100,000 people and ranked 12 in the worldwide count with countries like Sri Lanka, South Korea, and Nepal topping the list (Seervai par 2).
