The Theme of love in “Their Eyes Were Watching God”
The Harlem Renaissance was a historical period that was synonymous with minorities becoming increasingly incorporated into the national systems. Mo notable was the integration of the Africa American community in activities that would contribute to their development of heir people. Zora Neale Hurston was one of the African American women whose works coincided with the Harlem Renaissance period. However, it is essential to notice that while most of her works were written during the period of the movement, Zora Neale concentrated on themes that deviated from political movements and was more inclined to themes wit feminist leanings (Litchart). I the book “Their Eyes Were Watching God” Zora Neale uses the character of the young African American woman to bring out the struggles that women in general face in their quest for true love. In fact, while there have been arguments to suggest the book does not fully explore themes like race, the same cannot be said about the theme of love. The paper is a critical analysis of how Zora Neale uniquely unfolds the theme of love throughout the novel through a young woman’s exposure to marriage, marital oppression, sexuality, male chauvinism and equality in the medieval society.
