Chapter 4: Our Gendered Identities summary

Gender Identities

The word gender involves the social attitudes and behaviors that we expect to be related to the female or male sexes.  Gender identity therefore is a word for describing how much an individual’s behavior is masculine or feminine. Masculinity and femininity is complicated by the fact that the cultural messages with regards to what is masculine or feminine is rather diverse. As such, there are individuals with diverse sexual tendencies and there are also those who are not at ease with the sexes they adorned at birth (Lamanna et al., p.80). The chapter therefore explores the various aspects of gender. The society has changed greatly when considering the mid and late 20th century to these first two decades of the 21st century with regards to gender issues. Gendered social attitudes and expectations have changed such that most men and women have adorned roles that were traditionally thought not to be of their sex or gender without much speculation from the public.
