The end always justifies the means.  A virtuous citizen must maintain patriotism to his country without the expectation of reward while still bearing the risk of dying at the battlefield. In the play Henry IV by William Shakespeare the evolution of the pairing between Hal and Hotspur complimentarily achieve the definition of what it really means to be a virtuous citizen.

From the Onset, while Hotspur is presents himself as a responsible, brave natural leader, Hal enjoys drinking and partying with local peasants and He appears to  refuse to listen to his father’s  idea to follow in his footsteps (Gissinger, 2013).
