Abstract

Social media has been identified to hold a series of effects when considering the bend of public opinion. This prevalence has been identified to shape the political opinions and standings of many people involved in social media. Though social media has been seen to affect the public in a positive manner, it has also been identified to cause a detrimental upshot on the public following that some of the news spread over the social media do not have a rigid basis to them. An example is provided on the 2016 presidential elections where Donald Trump and his campaign team used the social media to bend the American public opinion to his favor. As such, a cross – sectional observational study I conducted to determine the public knowledge of the direct consequences of social media on their opinion as well as whether they realize that such effects are used by politicians in political campaigns. In the cross – sectional observational study, it was realized that many people are not fully aware that social media has a more detrimental effect on their opinions than they thought before.
