Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller

This book begins with Bruce Wayne being a well-known millionaire, who gets into a gruesome car accident but I able to escape. Gotham is in a lot of trouble, and the crime rate has increased since Batman stopped defending the city. A local newspaper reports that teenagers in Gotham believe Batman is just a myth as they have never seen him. James Gordon is still the head of police, and he knows that Bruce is Batman. When having a drink, Bruce discovers that James might know him and leaves. He ends up almost getting mugged an ends up thinking it is time to bring Batman back. He is however conflicted with his decision as this means he has to give up the Bruce Wayne identity. There is a criminal gang called the mutants, who Batman wants to transform them to do his bidding. The authorities are not pleased that Batman is back and do everything to get rid of him.
