Despite problems with the research, The Stanford Prison experiment is often discussed as an important study in human behavior. The author of the course text, Shane Bauer, often discusses this experiment throughout the first half of the book. The author specifically mentions the experiment and specifically on page 85. After reading and annotating the article, watching the class videos and considering the book, complete the below assignment.

  1. Write a summary of the article.
  2. Consider the author’s training. During the training, the other officers are asked questions about themselves, their behaviors and their values. Using specific examples from the book, how is the prison environment designed to change prisoners’ behavior and beliefs? Consider the prison’s rules and procedures.
  3. Consider how the author describes himself throughout the first half of the book. Using specific examples, give details about how the prison environment changes his personality and others around him.
  4. The article discusses how the treatment of prisoners receive can impact their success upon release. After reading the article and considering the book are American prisons designed to punish people or rehabilitate them? Use specific examples from the book and the article to support your point.
