Choose a substance, other than water, whose atoms or ions are held together by one of the following types of chemical bonds:

Ionic
Covalent
Metallic
Hydrogen
Important: If your chosen substance does not correctly match the molecular bond, your essay will not be accepted for credit!

Construct an engaging three-paragraph essay that completely and concisely* fulfills the following requirements:

Paragraph 1 – after doing some research, discuss a common use or important purpose of your chosen substance
Paragraph 2 – Integrating specific terms and concepts discussed in this week’s readings and resources, develop a summary discussion that includes the following:
The name and chemical formula for the substance
The composition of the substance (i.e., the names of the atoms comprising the substance)
The specific name and description of the chemical bonds that exist between the atoms or ions in the substance
The physical properties of the substance
The state(s) of matter in which this substance is naturally or normally found in
Your discussion in this paragraph should integrate specific terms and concepts discussed in this week’s readings and resources.
Paragraph 3 – provide your perspective on the importance of this substance or its properties, drawing on your own experiences as applicable

Response Requirements

Develop an engaging response to at least one other student’s essay with commentary that substantively and thoughtfully furthers the discussion. Your commentary should be focused on two or more of the following areas
Elaborating with additional factual details related to the essay topic from current or past weeks’ lessons, our textbook, or outside sources (cited appropriately)
Making specific connections or comparisons between your essay and the student’s essay in the context of the essay topic and/or the science concepts tied to the topic
Providing additional perspective on, or an experience related to, any part of the student’s essay
Multiple responses are encouraged but not required

Original work is expected. Write your essay and response primarily in your own words, using appropriate paraphrase, summary, and synthesis techniques when integrating information from course material, our textbook, or other sources. Reserve use of an author’s exact words only when the language is especially vivid, unique, or needed for technical accuracy
Use of correct spelling and grammar is also expected
All sources must be cited at the bottom of the essay. APA format is not required
In referencing material from our textbook, provide the chapter and section of the referenced information
In referencing course lessons or videos, provide the name of the lesson or video
Factual statements based on personal experience or expertise must be clearly identified as such, i.e., “Based on my experience …” or “In my line of work …”
Otherwise, provide the exact web address of the source
