Week 12.Khalil Gibran.
This week we will cover Khalil Gibran

Gibran’s one of the most talented poet in Arabs history. He was born in Lebanon in 1883. He emigrated to the United State with his family when he was young in 1895. He completed his education in the United State. He studied the art and literature. He’s also known in the western world by his book (The Prophet) published in 1923. The story of his name started in the school by named him accidentally Khalil Gibran. When he was 15, he returned to Lebanon and continued his middle school. After graduating, he started to learn about Arabic literature and poems. He fell in love with Hala Althaher and he wrote a story called (The Broken Wings) about his relationship with her. His writing was so romantic and spiritual. In his book (The Broken Wings), he was describing Hala in very beautiful way. According to his story, (The Broken Wings), “She wore a cloak of deep sorrow through her life, which increased her strange beauty and dignity, as a tree in blossom is more lovely when seen through the mist of dawn”. Even though he didn’t marry her, he wrote about her because he loved her and she was beautiful in his eyes and even in his books.

He wasn’t just writing about love; he had two path of writing. He was writing about religions beside enjoy the pure of life. He combined those two paths in one poems that Fairouz the famous Lebanese singer sang it called (Al-Mawakib) (The Processions, 1919). He was always keeping up with the political actions and spoke up about them. He was from a Christian family. Gibran died in 1931 in New York. He was 48 years old. He had Cirrhosis and Tuberculosis. He was wishing to burial in Lebanon, and it happened. There are couple of words written by his grave. According to (Poem Hunter), “a word I want to see written on my grave: I am alive like you, and I am standing beside you. Close your eyes and look around, you will see me in front of you”. The place that his grave on became a museum called Gibran’s museum.

(The Prophet) the most popular book for Gibran. He wrote the book in English and has been translated to 50 languages. The book was about love, marriage, children and death. In general, it was talking about the life routine and the spiritual need of human. The book was published in 1923. The prophet was a book of ambition and hope in poetical way. In 1931, Gibran said “the Prophet book took my whole life, I wanted to make sure that every work in the book is the best that I can write”. Even after his death, the Prophet book still in store and still popular. The reason why it’s so popular even after his death, because the book was readable for any kind of people. Christin, Muslims, and even Jewish. According to the article “Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet: Why is it so loved?”, (2012), “But it is not filled with any kind of dogma, it is available to anyone whether they are Jewish or Christian or Muslim”. Also, a lot of famous people such as John of Kennedy and Indira Gandhi influenced by the book.

Another popular poem that he wrote is (lovers called). The poem was kind of sad that he’s calling someone’s not with him. When you read the poem you feel that he is missing somebody or that person passed away. The poem has no story or even a relationship like The Broken Wings. He was getting some memories that the day they met. According to the poem, “Do you have memory of the day we met, when the halo of you spirit surrounded us, and the angels of love floated about, Singling the praise of the soul’s deed?”. That different kind of poems make him the most popular because he meets the preference of all people.

Other poem from his writing that I really like is called (on children). This poem was about freedom of children. It was a message for parents to give the freedom for their children. The freedom of life, thoughts and love. That shows how he was open minded to life. Even though he was asking for freedom to children, he never had children. In the poem, he was describing children as they are the son’s and daughter’s of life’s longing. According to the poem, “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you”. The language for this poem was pretty difficult in English unlike in Arabic. Also, it much beautiful in Arabic because there were a lot of words that gave the poet a great flavor.

The poet of the West and East is the best name that we can describe Khalil Gibran.

He has many collections written in Arabic and in English. He has a lot of fans in West culture and East. He wasn’t partial, this the most reason that made him very popular from so many sided and kind of people. Also, most of his poems and books was translated into many languages. Which can introduce Arabs literature to many people from different culture and countries.

In conclusion, Gibran was great example as a poet. He gave the poets a beautiful taste with his words. He discovered a lot of things such as social life, love, and even religions. A lot of his writing was about love. Even though he didn’t marry, he was inspirational in love. His love experiment was always falling. He had a great love story with Mary Hascel the French lady. They loved each other for years but she refused to marry him because his younger that her. That didn’t mean that they broke away, they were still friends and she was always being an awesome supportive for him financially and emotionally. Even after his death, she was still love him. Gibran had a tough life, he never lived a stable relationship. Also, his childhood wasn’t the perfect one to any child. But, he fought and survived and succeed. He died 85 years ago, but he’s still in the poem history, he’s still known in poem fans. Also, his books still there and his poems all over the world in many languages.

After reading : Each student should write one reflection and post it in class dissection

Each student should read at least one poem outside of class and write about 200 words about the poem to post to class discussion .

This post needs to include an analysis of the poem. How to write your reflections or how to analyze a poem:

First read the poem all the way through at least twice. Read it aloud. Listen to it. Poetry is related to music, so the sound is important. You listen to your favorite CDs many times; the principle is the same.

It takes time to fully appreciate and understand a work of art. Make a note of your first impressions or immediate responses, both positive and negative. You may change your mind about the poem later, but these first ideas are worth recording. Second: Study the literal meaning and themes.

Instructions: Your initial post must make an argument which addresses the prompt, use the readings to support it, and be around 200 words. You must then reply to another student’s post.
