Happy Endings

Happy Endings

Description

Instructions:
For your second response, please write a 500 word analysis of "Happy Endings" or "The Yellow Wallpaper" – whichever text you did not write about for Response 1 – through the lens of one of the theories in the literary theory packet. Pick a theory – feminism, for example. Think about the goal of feminist criticism – the construction of a society in which there is gender equality. What would a feminist say about "Happy Endings"? Does it challenge or re-enforce patriarchy (a society in which men are in control) or gender roles? What does the story tell us , intentionally or not, about gender? Once you decide what you think the story is doing from the perspective of the theory you are using, you then write your response in the same way you wrote the first response. Write a brief introduction in which you state your position. Then write some body paragraphs in which you prove your point. End with a brief conclusion where you say why your argument is important. Be sure you quote and analyze the text to prove each point you make in the body. If you do not quote and analyze the language of the text, you will not receive more than half credit for your response. If you do not follow the proper format, you will lose one point.

Please refer to the last page of the literary theory packet – using literary theory – for additional help in using theory to analyze the story. When you look back over the story, look for any language that seems to relate to your theory. The goal, in a sense, is to identify signifiers (words), the meanings of which (what they signify) you will explain by using the terms of your theory (as we do in class).
