Grandmother’s Selfishness in A Good Man is Hard to Find

A Good Man is Hard to Find was written by Flannery O’Connor and first published in 1953. Being a staunch Catholic, most of O’Connor’s stories revolve around the debate between good and evil. Thus, the narrative explores the issue of divine grace but in the process provides vital insights into selfishness. The story entails a grandmother traveling with her son’s family for a vacation to Florida from Atlanta. However, the grandmother claims she preferred going to East Tennessee as there was a violent misfit on the loose in Florida.  She secretly carries her cat to the trip. Along the way, she notices they are close to a plantation she once visited. Thus, she lies to her family that the plantation had a house, which had a secret panel.
