The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson, is a short story that was first published during the 1900’s. The story consists of a fictional small town where every year they hold a specific ritual called “The Lottery.” What happens in this ritual, is that every year, one person from the town is chosen to be killed. This story consists of many different types of figurative language. In the short story, “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson is telling us the dangers of blindly accepting actions as just custom or regular traditions. It uses many literary devices consisting of symbolism, characterization, and figurative language, which shows the insights of what happens in “The Lottery.”
