Discussion questions:

Watch the video on creating the SWOT analysis and answer the following questions.

Question one

  • Pick a company that you admire (and will be familiar to your colleagues) and provide one strength, one weakness, one opportunity and one threat. Explain this and provide your rationale for this statement.

Question two

  • In order to help you on your written assignments, it is important to know what plagiarism is and why it is not acceptable in your work. In your own words, describe plagiarism and how to avoid it in your written assignments. Also, what is Safe Assign and what is the value specific to plagiarism?

Question three

  • All academic writing is based on references. There is a difference in the quality of references that you will find. You are required to use peer-reviewed, academic references to support your work. In your own words, what is a peer-reviewed, academic reference and why is this necessary?

Company: Verizon Wireless

Strength- Existing network and aggression/investment in 5g network, paving the way for future industry.

Verizon has always excelled in network infrastructure- they put more of a priority and budget on network than any other cellular network provider. This is a strength that has cemented the reputation of Verizon as reliable, strong, and available essentially everywhere in the US. Additionally, 5g is in part powered through fiber networks, and Verizon has large assets of “Dark Fiber”- lines that are ran or have existing infrastructure but are not ready to be set to 100% ready for use.

Weakness- Existing 5g bandwidth is high frequency MM band, which has incredible quality but terrible range.

Verizon has rolled out large city 5g networks, but the limits of millimeter wave band are incredibly restrictive in covering non-urban areas where large swaths of land must be covered at a cost that is not worth investment with existing spectrum or is extremely cost prohibitive.

Opportunity- New bandwidth sales and increased Internet of Things business models.

Per (Pressman, 2019) there is spectrum that may be available for bidding soon. Verizon has always been aggressive on bandwidth purchase and use. Being able to access that bandwidth and utilize it would guarantee Verizon absolute domination in the 5g marketplace. The company could then utilize the high and low spectrum to create strong signals that cover vast expanse while also increasing low latency and overall network quality/speed beyond what competitors could offer.

Threat- Thresholds for network performance and misinformation.

As more competitors improve their cellular network, they reach platforms of performance that the average customer is satisfied with. Most networks that operate under broad scale 4g or Advanced 4g are able to stream music with no issues regardless of location, play videos at a high definition scale of 720 or 1080p, and even play online games with relatively few connection issues (Fortnite, etc.) This level of satisfaction and device limitation addresses customers needs as they currently exist. If Verizon does not have some incredible new technology to leverage with this technology, the large amounts of their customer base will not see a reason to stay with a more expensive carrier when someone operating at a lower price point offers the same thresholds.

—————————————————-

Additionally, misinformation about networks has only increased over time. An excellent example that backfired was AT&T updating their network symbol in existing cellular devices to “5G” (Kastrenakes, 2019). While the CEO seemed to delight in confusion and misinformation, at the time customer response was generally negative. However, as time goes on the technical details of network terminology the equipment behind this groundbreaking infrastructure will fade from customer memory. Verizon faces a very real threat in not being able to simplify and explain why and how their network is specifically better. Competitors of Verizon who do not invest nearly as much in their networks are all too happy to muddy the waters.

Plagiarism- to me, the definition of plagiarism is intentionally or knowingly using someone else’s work as your own as related to written materials.

Plagiarism is avoidable by writing original content. While there will always be some similarities when discussing a topic many others have before, the English language is one of the most varied languages in the world and I’ve yet to have an issue with plagiarism by simply reviewing the provided materials, and writing in my own way.

Safe Assign is a software application that checks submitted works against previously written materials both online and I assume in some database for previously submitted papers. It’s value with regards to plagiarism is the ability for it to quickly check and contract existing works vs. those submitted.

—————————————————

Peer-reviewed academic reference is information that has been posited by someone with interest in the respective field, that has then been verified or tested and acknowledged by peers with an interest or dedication to the same or similar field. This means that the person who both submitted the information initially, and the others who check it are experts and educated in said field. It’s necessary to reference material from this group, because of the higher quality and accuracy of the information. The higher quality and accuracy of source material, the higher quality and accuracy of reference and conclusions.

Question one

  • Pick a company that you admire (and will be familiar to your colleagues) and provide one strength, one weakness, one opportunity and one threat. Explain this and provide your rationale for this statement.

Company: Verizon Wireless

Strengths: Network & Strong Brand Image

Verizon has won multiple awards for best network and proudly advertises those awards. Its brand is the best network and the continued investment to make it better tomorrow than it is today.

Weakness: Pricing & Global Market Share

Verizon offers a premium product and charges a premium price because of its advanced network. Other companies claim the same network at lower pricing which cuts into market share. Verizon does not have a large global presence and is heavily based in the US.

Opportunity: 5G Growth – 1st to 5G Network

Verizon is leading the way to 5G and different applications for its use. The drive for 2020 is to develop new use cases for how 5G internet can bring new products and enhance old ones for a better experience.

Threats: Competitors ATT – Sprint- T-Mobile

While Verizon is leading the way to 5G and charging premium pricing for this service other competitors like AT&T and T-Mobile are both marketing 5g like speeds that do not compare to Verizon 5G. Ex: AT&T released 5Ge that is basically the same speed and latency of Verizon 4G speeds and is offering this at a lower price.

Question two

  • In order to help you on your written assignments, it is important to know what plagiarism is and why it is not acceptable in your work. In your own words, describe plagiarism and how to avoid it in your written assignments. Also, what is Safe Assign and what is the value specific to plagiarism?

Plagiarism is when you take a part or all of someone else’s work and try to pass it off as your own work. It’s important to avoid plagiarism in our written assignments for multiple reasons. However the most important reason to avoid plagiarism is that it takes your opportunity as a student to truly learn about the topic you are researching and writing about.

Safe Assign is a software that allows you to post your writing and provides you a score on the originality or the work you wrote. This is important to make sure that you are posting your own thoughts and words in your written work. The software helps you avoid accidental plagiarism.

Question three

  • All academic writing is based on references. There is a difference in the quality of references that you will find. You are required to use peer-reviewed, academic references to support your work. In your own words, what is a peer-reviewed, academic reference and why is this necessary?

A Peer-Reviewed writing is an article written by someone that is considered to be an expert in their field and then reviewed by other experts in the same field before it is published.

Academic Reference is a written vote of confidence from a professor or teacher. These references are given to show competency of the person in the reference is intended for. Both peer-reviewed writing and academic references are important because they can help strengthen your writing and provide backing for the points made in your writings.
