Where do you stand on the idea of materialism and its role in society?
Chapter 6 discussion.
In this chapter we discussed a term called materialism. Marx’s version of materialism explored how human beings organize themselves in order to survive and flourish by transforming raw materials into humanly useful objects, artifacts, and commodities – influencing and conditioning the way in which people think about themselves and the world – in motion, making and remaking the world into a more humanly habitable place. Engel’s version on the other hand, simply stated that, no matter how extensive the changes, matter remains eternally the same.
Many argue that materialism promotes the idolatry of possessions or material wealth. Possessions are believed to fill all human need and characterize quality of life. Even Marx argued that the creation of product makes the world a more habitable place. Where do you stand on the idea of materialism and its role in society? In addressing this question, consider some of the following questions: Are there benefits to materialism? Who is more at fault for materialism in the U.S., the businesses that produce or the consumers who purchase? How do you, and/or most Americans rank the importance of money, status and wealth on the one hand, and belonging, happiness, and peacefulness on the other?
Chapter 7 discussion.
Some scholars have argued that fascism is an antiquated theory of the past that was fully and finally defeated in World War II. Explain why you think that this view, Fascism no longer exists, is or is not correct. While considering your answer, consider the following questions: Are there examples of Fascism still being active today? Has it changed from the original theory? If so, how? Is there a danger of a repeat of leaders similar to Mussolini or Hitler in today’s world? in the U.S.? Remember to support your argument with data, research and/or examples from contemporary articles or news.
