Addressing and Confronting Bias and Prejudice

Tracy Davis Post
Frank is a 45-year old man who identifies as gay. His origin is mainly associated with German Italian, and English ancestry. His main reason for seeking help is because his boyfriend does not have sex with him (Brewer & Harper, 2020). However, when questioned about his boyfriend, it seems he is obsessed with an actor in one of the movies. From my personal view, I feel like Frank is gay,, but he has not met Mr. Bloom. He might be watching movies where Mr. Bloom is featured,, and probably he is attracted to him. However, he does not have any other details that relate to the actor. It is for this reason that when he is asked about his boyfriend, he becomes agitated, vague, and he avoids eye contact.

From a sociocultural perspective, Frank’s depression might be a result of the stigma and discrimination that he receives as a result of identifying himself as gay. Stigma and discrimination can worsen one’s mental health condition leading to social isolation and fear (Morrison, 2014). As a result of spending a lot of time alone, Frank is obsessed with movies in which Mr. Bloom is featured. He tends to develop a liking for him despite not knowing him because he is the only person he spends time watching. Frank is afraid to interact with other men in society because of the fear of being stigmatized and treated as a minority in society.
While treating the patient, the primary elements to focus on including his experience as a result of being gay, his attitudes and behaviors, and some of the effects of stigma such as a feeling of shame and guilt. It is also important to evaluate his past relationships and the reasons why he chooses to identify himself as gay.
